Our predictions fall into three categories: technical, web site development, and marketing. Each of us will make our fearless predictions in our own special area of expertise. To start our crystal gazing here's our webmeister extraordinaire - George Kosch. Internet Technical Predications for 1998 Worldprofit's Webmaster George Kosch, MSc. The number one technical development of 1998 will be a more efficient and organized Internet backbone. More money than ever will be invested to improve and expand the bandwidth capability of the Internet. What this means for you is faster access, less waiting time and better connectivity and the ability to move information faster. Despite the fact that in 1998 millions more people worldwide will access the Internet you won't have to wait any longer than you have to now. Looking into my crystal ball, my second prediction is that the Microsoft Explorer browser will clearly dominate the Internet as a whole. This will bring to a halt the multi-year browser war between Microsoft and Netscape with a clear cut Microsoft victory. Translation? If you own Netscape stock sell now! My third prediction is that in late 1998 technical developments will have progressed to the point where 30 second streaming video clips and video conferencing will become commercially viable for the first time. This means that you can arrange and participate in video conferencing right from your office and that you can introduce your products in a brief (30 second) video clip from your site. These developments are only possible because of the improved bandwidth. Web Site Development Predictions for 1998 Worldprofit Director of Web Site Development Sandi Hunter weighs in with her insightful predications. Prediction number one. The current drop in web site prices will continue in 1998. Over the last several years the cost of developing a web site has continued to decline despite the enormous increase in potential visitors. Just 1000 days ago, with traffic on the Internet worldwide a tiny fraction of what it is today, ridiculously high prices were being charged to advertisers. Net result? Big losses and disappointment. Right now we're in a new phase whereby newcomers to the Internet, including enormous numbers of new businesses, will get more space, more services and technically superior sites for lots less money. Prediction number two. Fancy is out in 1998. What people will want for their web site and what savvy Internet designers will deliver is client-centered value information. Klunky graphics are passe. Sites which are difficult to navigate and filled with non-functioning applets will clearly indicate that both owner and designer are old fashioned and out of touch with the latest in advances. Prediction number three. Do it yourself is out. In the early days of the Internet many people decided they could design a fabulous site all by themselves. As a result lots of putrid sites were created and lots of blue language filled the air. In 1998 more and more smart people will come to the conclusion about the Internet that they long to ago came to in regard to accounting, taxes and legal problems: get professional assistance! Over the last few years webmasters and web designers have gotton smarter, better and more professional about creating cutting edge sites. No longer can people sitting at home in their living rooms without experience expect to produce web sites that challenge the technical and design proficiency of the professionals. Creating your own amateur hodge-podge site with lots of bits and pieces will not enable you to compete successfully or meet your profit objectives. Marketing Predictions for 1998 Worldprofit Co-founder and internationally syndicated columnist Dr. Jeffrey Lant projects these three marketing developments. Prediction number one. More people with web sites will upgrade to their own domain. People with web experience, particularly small and medium sized businesses will recognize that having their own domain makes more economic sense and is both easy to develop and keep up to date. Hitherto, lots of non-technical people have avoided getting their own domain because they thought it would be "hard". Domains, however are now a household word and not having one will definitely put a business at a competitive disadvantage. Marketing prediction number two. More businesses will realize that they can maximize customer and prospect contact with a listserver. Smart businesses have now proven that regular email contact with prospects and customers makes money and outdistances their competitors who use traditional marketing. They know that with an inexpensive listserver program they can send unlimited non-spam subscription email and that the more they send, the lower the cost. This is exactly opposite to traditional mail and telephone marketing where the more you use the more you pay. Thus, businesses will rush to acquire one or more listservers. Prediction number three. Traffic development is king. Not so long ago, the big thing was just being on the web. In 1998 the key element will be traffic development. Traffic development equals profit! Smart businesses will carefully evaluate and select traffic generating tools including: links from high traffic sites, banners within high traffic sites and other high visibility positions within high traffic sites. Smart businesses will do everything possible to link and be associated with high traffic entities. Prediction number ten from all three experts. Phillips All Rights Reserved © Copyright 1998 Over the years many have approached me asking how they could get champagne publicity on a beer budget. I tell them the answer is quite simple... "you must work smarter instead of harder" it's a simple idea I know, but one that most refuse to adopt even though many have heard it before. Here's only one of the many ways to easily gain publicity for any business, idea, service or whatever you wish to market. I live in Richmond, VA where we have our share of restaurants. One day years ago, I was sitting in a small diner about an hour outside of Richmond and I overheard two people talking about an ad they saw on the place mats that were on each table. The two were saying how they might go by the particular business after their meal etc. I also heard them talking about how they never knew that particular business was in town. What does this say about the importance of marketing yourself? Anyway, I asked my waitress if I could take the place mat that adorned my table with me. She told me "you sure can, people take them all day long!" with a great big smile on her face. She then added "we get tons of business from people who then see the mats after people pass them around." I went to the business the couple had earlier spoke about and asked the owner how long she had been at that location. She told me she had been there for almost three years. I then asked how business had been over that three year period. Before I could even ask her about the success of her place mat ad, she told me although she had been there for three years, this year was her best due to the place mat advertising she was doing at the diner. This gave me reason to think about something I was surely missing out on. For those of you who do not know me or haven't seen one of our national television, radio, magazine, or newspaper ads, I thought I had most of my publicity bases covered. We are constantly promoting. When I got back home I traveled around to several of the local restaurants looking for someone else doing what I now wanted to do with the place mats. Guess what, nobody was doing it! In the next couple of weeks that followed, I sat down and made calls to many in town pretending to be a possible customer. I called ad placement companies like "Val-Pac" and many others that offer coupon ads etc. I compiled all of their rates. Next I called area printers and found one that would give me the best price to print 10,000 place mats in two colors. With my rate sheet done and a printer eagerly awaiting my new business, I was ready to go out and test this stuff. On a Monday morning I went to Broad street which is one of the "main strips" running through Richmond. I approached a seafood restaurant. I noticed they already had place mats on their table however the mats were plain white with a generic stamp on them. I asked the owner where he got them. He told me there is a company that sells them to restaurants up and down the east cost and that he pays around $30.00 a month for them and his name is stamped on them. As we talked further I asked if it were possible that other seafood restaurants in nearby areas also bought their mats from this same company and like him used the same background design. He looked at me knowing exactly what I was getting at and answered, "yes and I don't really like that aspect of it but I need mats for my tables." He then was practically begging me to ask him about letting me put place mats on his tables. The long and short of it is he jumped at the chance when I told him I would give him 10,000 mats FREE of charge and that all he had to so is sign a contract with my company agreeing to use them until they were all gone. He happily agreed and I was in business! I then made 6 cold calls and had sold three ads before noon! I had earned over $750.00 and it was practically the easiest thing I had ever done when it comes to advertising. It took me three more days to sell the remaining spaces on the place mats. Now... here comes the BEST part! I designed MY OWN ADVERTISEMENT and placed it on these 10,000 place mats along side all the others I had sold earlier. Not only would my advertisers get 10,000 people LQQKing at their ads but SO WOULD I. I had them printed and then delivered to the restaurant. A few days went by and I called a few advertisers to see how the response was. The first advertiser I called said they had gotten a few calls. The second advertiser said they were pleased and might want to place a larger ad next time as they had seen others on the mat that came up with neat ads. What happened next blew me away! The third advertiser I contacted asked me if I would work up a special deal if he agreed to run an ad on not only this restaurant but ALL others that I did! Well, of course I said with a huge grin on my face YES ! Now I will briefly explain here that it costs very little to have the mats printed and I had easily earned enough from selling the ads the very first day to pay for the printing. The rest was ALL profit. In fact here's a few figures for you to consider... $937.63 / 5 days ! $1,071.66 / 3 days ! $1,096.26 / 4 days! I made a profit of $3,105.55 in just 3 weeks + 30,000 people guaranteed to see my ads for FREE ! Where else can you do this? Well to bottom line it, I now have 7 restaurants and that means that at any given time 70,000 people SEVENTY THOUSAND people see my ads day after day! What does it cost me? NOTHING, NATTA, ZILCH, ZIPPO, not 1 thin dime! I now have this down to a science, I call my advertisers when it's time to print more place mats for a particular restaurant and the advertisers have a check waiting for me to pick up to run their same or bigger ads again and again! I rarely do any cold calls at all now ! I even have some advertisers that call me saying they have found another restaurant willing to accept FREE place mats and they want me to sign the restaurant up! I smile at this cause I know that it translates into $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$ and FREE publicity for me ! Bell "Support Your Downline" The key to successfully supporting your downline is to focus on helping your downline to get what they want out of life. Do they want more money? More of the freedoms mentioned at the beginning of this report? Whatever they want out of life you must find a way to help them to get it. This may seem like an insurmountable task when you consider that everyone has different goals, interests, and skill levels. The way to help these people of varying backgrounds is to offer exceptional downline support. Why should you support your downline? Because if you don't you will lose everything you are working for. This is because 80% of those who join a MLM company never sponsor anyone. On top of that, most who join MLM programs become inactive or drop out all together within the first year because they are unsuccessful, they have not recruited anyone, and they are not making any money. Why don't 80% of those who join MLM programs recruit anyone? Simple, it's because they either don't know how or because recruiting is uncomfortable to them. They can't see themselves trying to get friends, family, or strangers to join their downline. They see people getting mad at them. Laughing at them or otherwise putting them on the spot. What must you do to help them? You must find ways to make the recruiting and selling process as easy as possible for your downline. You must put their recruiting and selling on auto- pilot so that they don't have to do it themselves. What if you decide not to do this for them? What if you decide to let them follow the company's advice about recruiting and selling instead of personally helping them to grow their business? If that is all you do for them then your downline will leave you in search of a sponsor or business opportunity that does offer support and does help them to recruit and sell their products. This means you will be constantly struggling to recruit and sell to replace all of the people who drop out of your downline just because you did not offer exceptional support. There are several ways to support your downline so that they will continue to make your business grow and produce income for you and for them. Here are a few suggestions: * Write a monthly newsletter. Your newsletter may be as simple as a couple of hand-typed pages which you photocopy and distribute to your downline to as elaborate as a designed by a professional desktop publisher and printed on the latest digital or laser copiers. I'd suggest that you create a simple newsletter consisting of a few hand-typed or computer generated pages in the form of a person-to-person letter. This would be the same type of format as a letter you were writing to a close friend or family member. The reason for this is because you want to remain on a personal level with your downline. Plus, a letter is so much easier to read than a multi-column newsletter. Unless you have a downline numbering into the hundreds or thousands it'd probably be a waste of time and money and be more trouble than it is worth to create a more elaborate newsletter. What do you put in your newsletter? You could include your personal experience and observations about your company's products or pay plan or business opportunity. You could also include experiences and observations of those who are using your products or have joined your business opportunity. Of course you could use your newsletter just to stay in touch with your downline as well as to distribute information. * Create custom marketing documents, mailers, lead generating programs, postcards, etc. Not only must you create your own materials for your own use, you must also provide these materials to those in your downline who either feel they do not have the skills or resources to create their own marketing materials. I have done this for my downline in the program I am promoting and have seen surprising results. Many in my downline have never recruited or sold a single product in MLM before and now they too are succeeding and beginning to reach their dreams. This is an essential part of supporting your downline. If you haven't yet noticed, just about everyone who's involved in promoting a MLM opportunity by mail is using the exact same materials that everyone else is using. This is stupid! Think about it. In who's interest is it to encourage everyone to use the exact same marketing materials? It's in the company's best interest and not yours. The reason I say this is because most companies and professionals know that the more a person is exposed to the same or similar marketing materials the more comfortable and confident they become with the company. I believe marketing guru Jeffrey Lant refers to it as the Rule of Six. This means a person must be exposed to information about a product, service, or company six times or six different ways before they take notice and take action. That is why the companies want you to use the same materials as everyone else, so that prospective MLM'ers will become comfortable about the company and the business opportunity. Why is this bad for you? Think about this, if a potential MLM candidate receives six similar postcards or letters about a business opportunity and decides to check it out or join, who's downline is he going to join? All six? No way!!! They are going to use their own subjective decision-making abilities to decide who to contact for more information or who's downline to join or buy products from. For example, when I receive several similar mailers for the same opportunity I request additional information from the person who is closest to me geographically. That means everyone in New Jersey, New York, Canada or wherever else I receive information from loses out just because there is someone who is closer. I know several people who make choices about who to contact based on quality of the printing company, whether the mailer has a postage stamp or meter. There are probably thousands of different reasons people choose one number over another. No matter how they choose, if you use the exact same mailers and marketing materials as everyone else you stand to receive one in 10,000 chance of having that person contact you instead of the thousands of others who are involved in your program. If you are using the exact same documents as everyone else you risk wasting your money. The easiest way to create your own marketing materials is to look at what successful MLM'ers are doing and do the same thing. Are they writing books, newsletters, and news articles? Then you must do the same. The way to learn to be a great marketer is to study what great marketers are doing and teaching. Jeffrey Lant, Linda J. Bruton, Blackman, Mikrut, and others have set the standards by which you must follow if you want to stand out as a successful MLM'er. Not only must you create your own marketing materials but you must also create your own lead-generating materials and lead- generating systems. A great FREE way to learn how to create your own lead-generating program is explained in detail in a free special report from marketing expert Bob Loevy. The report is titled, "How To Flood Your Business With All The Profitable Customers You'll Ever Need, Guaranteed..." and you can get it free of charge by calling his 24 hour information line at 1-800-298-3422 (I hope he doesn't mind me telling you about his free report). I strongly recommend that you request Bob Loevy's FREE report too. Though Bob doesn't know me and there is no remuneration for telling you to get his report I do so because it contains useful information that you can apply right away. Many "free" reports are so useless that the only way to make application of them is to buy the stuff the reports are promoting. They're like big, multi-page advertisements and useless as learning aids. This is not true of Mr. Loevy's report. The information in the report is truly useful and valuable. * Record your own training and marketing cassettes. This is easier than you might think. You simply need to figure out what you want to say, then say it. Of course you need to make sure what you are saying is useful enough and/or motivational enough to keep the listener's attention. The best (my favorite) type of personally recorded cassettes admit that they are "personal" and the speaker admits that he or she is reaching out in cassette form because it's so convenient for the listener. What do you record on your cassette? How about information about your products, your business opportunity, your personal experiences in MLM, or the experiences of others who use your products. If you choose to do this make certain that you are not violating your company's policies and procedures. Many MLM companies don't want their distributors creating their own materials because the company cannot control the content of the cassettes. If a distributor says something in a cassette that is incorrect or not supported by the company, the distributor could impact the company as well as him or herself. So check with your company before releasing your own cassettes about your company or its products. The most hassle-free cassettes to record are those in which you tell about yourself and your experiences in MLM and the J.O.B. (just over broke) world. No company can prevent you from speaking your mind in this way since the Constitution of the United States of America gives you the right to free speech. Just make certain that you do not make claims of any kind about your specific MLM opportunity. * Provide free leads to your downline. Once you begin your own lead-generating program as outlined by Bob Loevy's free report you will likely have more leads than you can personally follow up on. The best way to insure that no one falls through the cracks is to share the leads with your downline. What benefit is it to share the leads? Well think of it this way, why did you join an MLM in the first place if not to benefit from the success of those you help? Not only will your success be even greater because of your willingness to share but you will also foster trust when your downline sees that you are serious about your success and serious about their success too. Of course before you can share leads you must have leads to share. That's why I suggest you request the free lead- generating report from Bob Loevy. Call the free phone number listed above to get your personal copy. There is a second way to get high response leads without spending a penny. Some will likely object to this method because it borders on competitive espionage. This is a method that I've been using off and on for over ten years now. I've had as high as 85% (purchase) response rate from this method. Some marketers brag about having received unheard of 100% response rates from people who were looking for free information. What I'm talking about is 85% of the people I marketed to actually sent me money. What's the secret? a) It's targeting people who are actively participating in a business opportunity and not just interested in receiving "free" information. b) After you have found them you promise them more of what you know they want, i.e. greater success with the program they are now working or success through a program that offers them all the things they like about their current program, without the negatives they don't like. How do you get FREE names, addresses, and phone numbers of active MLM'ers and people who are operating home-based businesses? Simple. You make them contact you instead of you contacting them. The way to do this is explained in my "Competitive Espionage Report" you may receive a copy by contacting me by mail. The report is only $5, including shipping and handling. I've been using this system for a few years and I have literally received more FREE leads than I can possibly handle. When I say FREE I mean FREE. I do not mean invest $$$ into some "leads" club to receive what they call free leads, I mean other than the cost of my report you will never again need to spend a penny for quality, active, MLM leads. They will be totally FREE when you follow the instructions in my "Competitive Espionage Report"! After you receive your leads, simply call each person and ask them how their opportunity is working for them and ask why they joined that particular company. The reason to ask how their program is working for them is because 97% of mlm'ers are not making any real money. That means the majority of people you speak with will be open to the right opportunity. If you have a real program that pays real money then you are in a great position to get several experienced and active mlm'ers into your downline. The reason to ask why they joined their particular MLM program is to find out what they are interested in, i.e. great products, making money, etc. If your home-based opportunity also offers what they are interested in then you have an outstanding opportunity to recruit someone who's already interested, active, and ready for your product and/or program. The secrets in "Competitive Espionage Report" will provide you with the best source of leads you can ever find because those who you speak with are people who want to improve their lives and run their own successful businesses. The leads you buy from "lead" companies often include people who have only requested information and not necessarily people who are active MLM'ers. By the way, I strongly suggest that you get a separate phone line if you plan on using my "Competitive Espionage Report" because your phone is going to ring off the hook with hundreds of MLM'ers who are going to call you to tell you about their MLM opportunities. Your family will hate you (and you will hate yourself) if you don't have a separate line to accept incoming calls from experienced MLM'ers who want you to join their downline :) * Follow up leads and make phone calls for your downline. This goes along the same lines as sharing leads. Your willingness to help your downline to succeed will result in your receiving greater success in return. * Help your downline automate their business by offering free or low cost voicemail, fax-on-demand, Internet web pages. You may be wondering why should you automate your recruiting and selling as much as possible. The reason for automating your recruiting and selling is because it's convenient for your prospective customers and prospective new recruit. With the changes in communication where everything is now "instant" you risk losing sells and distributors to others who can get information and products into the hands of your target market first. Another reason for automating your business besides convenience to your target market is that it's less work for you and less costly than personally photocopying, envelope stuffing, licking stamps, and standing in line at the post office so that you can get your information into the hands of those who may be really hot now for your product or opportunity (but may be cold by the time they receive your information). You can avoid this altogether by automating your literature and information distribution as much as possible. One of the ways to do this is by placing your information on the Internet via web pages. This is really a simple thing to do. If you can type on a computer or typewriter then you can type information for a web page. The purpose of your web page is to distribute information, not to entertain. That's why it's good to create a simple document that anyone can access anytime of day or night from anywhere in the world. If you are unfamiliar with the Internet I suggest you use America Online for starters. Despite America Online's many problems, being too big to help you one-on-one being one of their biggest problems, they are the best source for Internet newcomers to begin (plus they have one of the biggest --if not the biggest-- MLM forums anywhere online). I say use America Online for starting out because if you can use a typewriter and can move a computer mouse from side to side then you easily can put your information on the Internet through America Online. Plus, America Online is one of the few Internet sources that doesn't charge extra for allowing you to put business information on the Internet. Most other places prohibit placing any information remotely related to a business on the Internet (without charging extra). If you are new to the Internet and want help in putting your information "online" a great source of Information is Ken Clark. Call him at 805-934-0622 and tell him you want information about putting your business information on the Internet and he will either mail or fax the free information to you. This information is great for the beginner and the experienced Internet surfer who's looking to put their information on the Internet. Give him a call, the information is free. Another way to automate your business is to put your information on a 24 hour fax-on-demand system. A fax-on-demand is like a 24 hour answering machine that distributes its information by fax instead of by voice, as an answering machine does.
