"Are You A Pelican Marketer?"

Watching the pelicans catch fish near my house reminded me of
how some online marketers behave. These pelicans fly high over
the water where the unknowing fish don't notice them. The
pelicans spot a big fish and dive at high speed into the water.
A few seconds later the pelican surfaces and gulps down the
fish.
There's only one problem with the way this particular species of
pelican fishes. Their method eventually leads to their demise.
You see, as the pelican dives into the water at high speed,
intensely focusing on the target fish, he is damaging his eyes.
Eventually, these pelicans go blind, then they starve to death.
There are other water bird that slowly swim along, and when then
spot a fish, they dive for it and seem to have just as much
success as the pelicans at getting a meal. Their tried and true
method provides them with a nice meal too. Swimming along
looking for fish rather than flying above the water has other
hazards, but they don't blind themselves in the process of
getting a meal!
Many online marketers, are "pelican marketers". They fly high
above the market place looking for an unaware victim or
prospect. Then they swoop down forcefully and offer them a
product or service that the marketer really doesn't even believe
in. He eats that day, he makes a profit. However, in the
process he often destroys all possibilities of repeat sales. He
burns the bridge to future business, in effect "putting out his
own eyes".
The non-pelican marketer knows that to enjoy a steady lifetime
of fish, he needs to do 2 things:
1) He needs to make sure he offers his customers and prospects
things that will really improve their lives. He needs to
serve the customer rather than using him.
2) He needs to develop a marketing system, or plan that isn't
centered around one-shot sales. Instead, he needs to
develop a line of products that provide him with a steady
stream of orders from the same customers. How do you do
this? You develop a stream of products that all solve your
target market's problems.
Using pelican marketing - not developing long-term relationships
with your customers, means that you must constantly search for
new customers. For long-term business success, it's much more
profitable to focus most of your energy on serving existing
customers. Then instead of seeking new customer full-time, you
spend a small portion of your time prospecting. The majority of
your customers will come from repeat business and referrals from
your happy existing customers.
Examine your marketing efforts today. Ask yourself if you're a
pelican marketer. If you are, open your eyes to the fact that
this will likely lead to your ultimate demise. This is a fact
of life for the pelican marketer. This is a fact of life for
the pelican. The only really old pelicans I ever see are those
that hang around fishing piers receiving handouts from
sympathetic fishermen.

"How To Create Your Own Product Or Service (Part 2)"

In the first installment to this series, we looked at creating
and marketing your own info product. I gave several concrete
examples of info products I created with very little investment
of time or money which sell with tremendous success. If you
missed that article, it's posted online at:

installment let's look at creating and marketing your own
services.
When looking at marketing your own services you should
thoroughly examine, brainstorm, and tear apart several
critical issues. These issues are:
- What services are you qualified to offer
- Will offering this service provide a good return on your
investment of time and money
- Is this service suitable for leveraging by offering through
an affiliate program
- Is there sufficient market for this service to offer a steady
stream of customers long term
- Can you develop a line of back-end products to increase the
revenue stream from offering this service
Let's briefly look at these issues.
Most of us possess some unique talent that we can use to
create a service and earn an income from sharing this talent
with others. Talents that come to mind immediately are web
design, graphic design, copywriting, programming, data entry,
script writing or installation, legal research, website
optimization, website promotion, diet counseling, fitness
coaching, personal coaching and counseling, proofreading
services, ghost writing services, and too many other
possibilities to list here.
All of these services can be and are marketed successfully over
the internet. Develop a reputation for delivering quality in
any of these areas and you will get a steady stream of customers.
When looking at what service you might offer as your own
"product" also consider services that allow you to leverage
yourself more. To do this I generally think of services that
can be provided semi-automatically and delivered in an almost
endless quantity. The distinction between product and service
may get a little blurred here but that's ok. What are
"services" that might fall within this category:
- Pay for subscriber/lead services
- Pay for website traffic/visitor services
- Website submission or promotion services
- Website monitoring services
- Website translation services
- Website hosting services (very competitive)
- Remote script hosting services
- Custom content provider services
- Article writing or distribution services
- List management services
- Providing custom diet plans
- Providing custom fitness plans
- Personal financial management services
... you get the idea. Think of services that you can generate
and provide with the aid of software so that you really do have
an unlimited supply. Look at how you can improve on existing
services or come up with totally new services. Realize that if
you don't design your service properly you severely limit its
growth potential and the potential to offer back-end or add-on
products or services.
I recommend services where there is less competition due to
difficulty in delivering the service. Difficulty in product
delivery as a barrier-to-entry is a good thing. It means it will
be longer before someone encroaches on your market. This allows
you to perhaps price differently at first and harvest "monopoly
profits." Sorry - my economics training is slipping through :-)
Many services are so generic that it's difficult to distinguish
your service in the mind of your potential customers. This makes
your service a commodity and many customers will buy largely
based on price. Web hosting is a commodity service that
immediately comes to mind. To many customers, one web host is
just the same as all others. If you can distinguish your generic
product in the mind of your potential customer by becoming known
for superior quality or customer service then you no longer offer
a commodity. However, that takes a lot of very hard work and time.
If you can offer a service FIRST or where there are fewer
competitors then your task is easier.
When thinking of your service (or product) think in terms of
income stream. If you are forced to constantly search for
new customers so that you can make a one-time sale, you
severely limit your growth potential. If your system brings
in customers who use your services over and over again, then
you build in repeat business and a revenue "stream." Lead
generation and traffic generation services are examples that
come to mind. If you deliver quality traffic or leads then
your customers will buy from you again and again.
Along the same lines... if you can offer a range of different
levels of service you increase your revenue stream and
back-end sales. An example of this is Lead Factory (a service
offered by my friend Marty Foley). You pay for subscribers
to your list. His system generates subscribers by presenting
your ezine or list subscribe boxes displayed on high traffic
websites. Lead Factory offers a product line in that you
can specify the quality and demographics of the leads. You
can specify that you only want leads from certain countries,
or certain other demographics. You can get single opt-in
leads, or for a little more, you can get double opt-in leads.
Just by giving customers a few choices, this service comprises
a range of products and thus a product line. Satisfied customers,
such as myself, use the service over and over generating a nice
residual income for the provider. Check out this excellent

A service that can be offered in unlimited supply can generally
be priced and scaled so that you can also market it through
an affiliate program. A service where you manually do most of
the work can't generally be marketed successfully through an
affiliate program. If you are just selling your time and effort
then you generally don't want to share the revenue. Offering
a finders' fee or commission is possible with a personalized
service but it needs to be "high-end" enough to allow you to
charge a premium price. The limiting factor will be the
number of hours that you can spend delivering the service.
My personal experience with marketing services is that I
offered website and ezine promotion services. I also offered
website optimization services. I found all of the above too
labor intensive for my personal preference. I also noticed that
many relative newbies entered the market and offered cut-rate
fees. I priced my services based upon the value I placed upon
my time and expertise. I noticed many people enter and leave
the website promotion and optimization business - I suspect
for the same reasons. Don't get trapped offering a service
that under-values your time, effort and expertise.
A service which really can't be duplicated because you are
offering "you" is consulting or coaching. If you have, or
if you can develop expertise in an area, then this may be the
perfect service for you to market. It can be marketed in many
different ways depending upon how you define the service.
For example, you can market your expert knowledge through
telephone consultations, audio and video tapes, and even
tele-seminars. As you go from personal consultation to recorded
presentations, you go from service back to product but they
all tie together. Marketed properly, one will set you up to
offer the other as a backend product. For example, short
telephone consultations will often show the customer that they
need your longer videotaped or audiotaped presentations.
Sometimes listening to an audiotape or tele-seminar will show
a customer that he need to set up a personal consultation to
discuss to his specific situation more in-depth. Your expertise
in effect becomes an entire product line.
Creating your own product or service is how you earn the big
incomes online... especially if you use the leverage of an
affiliate program. Hopefully, this short series gave you the
basics of creating your own product or service. You now have a
good start for launching your own informational product or

"JavaScript is the easiest although PHP and Perl are
available. Use a freeware script and just follow
directions."
Dr. Irving Zinegold:
"Cookies suck. I use autoresponder plus (I see that you don't)
and because of that I have to send a cookie. Otherwise I
don't use them, I don't agree that they are necessary and I
don't recommend them. They are an invasion of privacy...
nothing more, nothing less."
Dotty Arima:
"I find 'Cookies' very useful. I am in and out of so many
websites that I often use "Cookies" as a back up to my
'Favorites' file. Also, if your Computer set-up is low on
resources, the 'Cookies' can be deleted to add more space.
Actually, I think it's important to delete your cookies
every day to avoid 'hackers' from accessing to your most
used files."
Jon Arnold:
"Don't use them. Everyone is security-conscious these days,
and when the user's browser stops and asks them about
accepting a cookie, now the user is uncomfortable at that
site."
Anonimus:
"Why have cookies? Most people, like myself, have cookies
turned off because they are untrustworthy. And sites that
use cookies, then they are losing my business!"
Wayne Sloan:
"I don't know about setting them up. I was looking at a
mailing list script this past week and recognized a line of
code in one of the scripts that placed a cookie on the
visitor's machine. You could set the expiration date, and
give a name for the particular cookie and so on. But I don't
recall whether that was an SQL, CGI or PHP function.
The cookie would be placed on the visitor's machine by the
server, and would be used to help the server recognize the
visitor."
Comments: What are cookies? Are they a tool or a danger?
They allow to save settings for a web site at the
visitors computer. This way the web site can show
things the way the visitor want's them... this way
they are a tool.
They allow a website owner to pay commissions to
the correct affiliate... this way they are also a
tool.
They allow to decrease the number of times a visitor
has to see the same pop-up window on a web page...
and also this way they are a tool.
Is there any way, that cookies can be a danger for
the visitor? None that I know about. So why are
many afraid of them? Maybe because they don't
know what cookies are and what they can do.
On their own... cookies can do nothing... they are
simply text files that can't do anything... except
storing information.
They can store e.g. the affiliate ID of a referrer,
times a site has been visited or other simple
numbers or texts that the visitor, the web site or
the browser supplied... they are NOT dangerous at
all... :)

you'll find PDF tools, Ebook Tools and Publishing tools.
You'll also find Ebook Software as well as most any Ebook you

"I went to the public library and they had some really good
and easy to understand books on the subject that walked you
through it."

3. Does anybody know a way to actually shut down SCAMMERS and
RIPOFF artists?

"No. Scammers and 'ROA' will continue to flourish as long as
there is an abundance of uneducated people (trying to be
polite here) who will take the scam ... some of them again
and again ...
Some of us will join groups so we can display a logo that
says our site or our program is approved, and we will pass
along to our members and anyone we contact the need to be
vigilant. Send our members to join and support the agencies
that will certify our site or program.
Still, the chance to make fast money will have appeal to
many, who will ignore all caution. Inevitably, legislation
will have its sway, but some countries will remain a haven
for 'ROA'.
A quick tool installed on your website will make it easy for
people to report a scam, add to data collected, help inform
everyone ... and maybe get them to visit your site more
often!

Attorneys General get better results when they ask federal
prosecutors to take action. Create a group of concerned
citizens who can each donate $10 to stopping rip offs. Then
allow yourself to be ripped off, get full documentation of
the rip off and prosecute."
Dotty Arima:
"Go the "ScamCentral", http://scamcentral.hypermart.net. They
have a list of current 'Scams'. They also offer additional
sections for readers, ie. 'Telephone Scam Alerts', and a
'Scam Alert Board' for reading as well as posting discovered
scams. From this site you can become a free member of their
'Scam Alert Program'. Hope this helps.
BTW: One thing to remember, actually, two.
1) If something sounds too good, it usually is!
2) My favorite, when in doubt, DON'T"

"A Word to the Wise seems in order here.
Many times we 'think' we have been spammed when in reality we
have just gotten frustrated with so much email. It is easy
to blame someone else for our own pains.
I suggest we just delete the problem email and get on with
living. Many new internet users try new things before they
know what they are doing. They occasionally make mistakes.
We should remember our beginnings and have patience with
them.
Forgiveness does heal our own bodies and souls better than
the bitterness that so easily overcomes us at times."
Comments: I also don't know a 100% sure way to shut down an
scammer... but I recommend to at least report him at
I-Cop at: http://www.add2it.com/go/to.pl?l=icop
I know the owner of I-Cop personally (I did install
some scripts for her)... and she really knows what
she is doing.
If you want to make 100% sure that you don't get
scammed, I would also recommend to buy online only
from I-Cop members or members of similar
organizations that protect the consumer.
