You've decided. You know it is critical to your online success,
and you are ready to jump in and become an Ezine Publisher.
Good for you!  You are headed in the right direction.

No doubt, the biggest hurdle you'll find along this road is
simple getting started.  The easy part is actually developing
your idea, setting up your format, deciding on your content,
how to mail it out, etc.  That's a breeze.  No problem.

The challenge comes after that is all finished.  Now you need to
start enlisting subscribers.

Get ready to work!

First of all, you MUST face the facts.  Some recent statistics 
tell us that there are AT LEAST 300,000 ezines out there.  And
every one of those ezine are competing for the same subscribers!
 
So, are you one of those that, when faced with those kinds of
facts, promptly gets discouraged?  Then, maybe you need to face
another fact: You may be in the wrong business!  But if you're
one of those who is motivated by a challenge, then read on.

First of all, building a successful subscriber list IS a
challenge.  But it is NOT impossible, if you know what you're 
doing, and also what everyone else is doing.

If you're willing to work harder than most ezine publishers, you
will get your share of the subscriber market.  One reason?  A
large majority of new ezine publisher, create their ezine, place
a subscribe form on their site, submit it to a handful of ezine
directories, and proceed to sit back and wait for the onslaught
of sign-ups.  NOT!

Building a subscriber list is a multi-tasker's dream!  The
secret is in the numbers.  Number of places you get your
information, number of different methods you use, numbers,
numbers, numbers! ( Work, work, work.)

But, we're getting ahead of ourselves.  Let's get back to just
getting started.  That was the hurdle we were talking about.  If
you are stuck in that overwhelming land of "I don't know where
to start", then here are 4 ways you can jump start your
subscriber list.  Start here, and I promise, the ball will start
rolling. 

1. Submit to Ezine Directories and Announcement Lists.

EVERY ONE YOU CAN FIND!  Remember, numbers.  Here are a list of
some of the best ones to get you started.  Do a search for Ezine
Directories.

Most will ask for a description of your ezine.  A well-written
description can make all the difference in whether folks choose
to subscribe.  As you're looking at these directories, make note
of the descriptions that catch your eye.

2. Join an Ad Co-op.

An Ad Co-op is a service (free to publishers) that sends you 
subscribers, in return for you running their classified ad.
These folks have agreed to subscribe to your ezine.  You have 
agreed to run their classified ad.

Note: The subscribers you get from these programs are not quite
as valuable, percentage-wise as the ones that choose to sign up
from your site, or from an ezine directory.  Many use yahoo and
Hotmail addresses to collect the ezines, and may never see your
issue.  BUT, once again, it is all in the numbers.  You WILL
gain some loyal subscribers from these. 

3. Install a Popup.

Yes, we know, there is a lot of muttering about popups around
the Internet.  BUT, facts are, we, and many others have seen the
largest increase in subscriber sign-ups after installing one.
They don't have to be intrusive.  A well-done popup can get some
amazing results.  (Especially when combined with #4 below!)

Installing a popup is somewhat of an advanced technique for your
site.  But we do have an article with instructions.  If you

4. Give away a gift for Subscribing.

Giving away a gift to your new subscribers can work for you in
more than one way.  First of all, it can obviously work as an
incentive to subscribe, if you are providing a gift that has
value and usefulness.  Secondly, if you are giving away a gift
(ebook or software) that contains information about you and your
site, then you are doubling its marketing value.

Ultimately, you want to work toward the goal of creating your 
own unique give-a-way product.  One you can give away, AND 
provide to others to give away.  (This is called Viral
marketing.)  But, realistically, if you are just getting started
as a publisher, you may not be ready for this.  So, give away 
someone else's product!  There are many available that allow you
to insert your site information in a prominent spot on the front
page, or screen.  (Called Co-Branding.)

There are many other ways that you can add to the numbers game
of ezine promotion.  These few mentioned here will give you a

An ezine publisher's job is never finished.  If you can accept 
that challenge, then you will be successful!

There is no doubt in anyone's mind that email is the most
important communications development in the history of the world
thanks to the Internet. 

The reason is simple. 

We can now communicate on a global scale in a matter of minutes. 

This is an awesome power and responsibility.  The power is the 
act of communication itself.  The responsibility comes in making 
use of this power in a reasonable and non-spam manner. 

That is why it is so important to establish a mailing list of
people that have agreed to receive your email messages. 

You can either build your list in a slow but steady manner, as 
detailed in our FREE Report, "Starting Your Own Newsletter!",

Or you can pay one of those online services to send out emails 
as confirmations whenever they post a free ad on the networks 
system. 

Either way, here are a few tips to "Explosively Increase the 
Success of ANY Email Advertising Campaign!" 

1. Your Subject Line is the MOST Important Element. 

The 'Subject Line' will either get your email read or
immediately deleted.  It is the single most important element of
your email message.  If you have a bad 'Subject Line' then you
may as well not even bother sending out the email in the first
place. 

Whatever time you invest on preparing your email campaign, make
the 'Subject' of the email your top priority to provide you the
opportunity to have a successful email campaign.

2. Use Action Words. 

Action words bring your message to life for the reader.  They
can help you convey to your target audience the importance of
your over-all message.

3. Do NOT OVER Capitalize. 

Some Capitalized letters are essential but too many can convey 
the sense of shouting and no one likes to be shouted at. 

Worse still, your message can take on a cluttered or amateurish 
look if you use all capital letters. 

4. Do NOT use too many Exclamation points! 

Same problem can arise here as with the use of too many capital
letters.  Do not risk having that a cluttered and amateurish
look to draw attention to your message. 

Your message itself should do the work of attraction. 

5. Personalize When Possible. 

If you have an email program that allows you to PERSONALIZE your
email messages, make use of it by making the 'Subject' message a
personal one for the reader.

that I send to my various lists.

6. Keep it 6 to 8 words maximum. 

A short Subject Title Line is better because if you make it too
long, many of the email programs in use will actually cut off
your 'Subject' message and make it either unreadable or at the
least, unappealing.

Make liberal use of these few tips and you will see a definite 
and 'Explosive Increase in the Success of your Email Campaigns'.

1. How can I make search engines re-index my site?
   (Question submitted by: Boulat Rafikov) 

Tony Rigby:
  "Change your page meta tags, content slightly, every couple of
   months resubmit, this way the search engine's spiders think
   the page is new because it is slightly different.

  If you are using an affiliate link with a (?) in it, don't
  bother, most don't index these apparently.  A good site to
  visit for more info is, http://www.searchengineforums.com"

Audra Gehrke:
  "First, make sure your meta tags are correct and your keywords 
   are in place then hand submit your site to the search
   engines. 

   I found if you use those automated submitter's, most search
   engines don't accept those so your better off taking the time
   to hand submit it, that way you know it was submitted."

Comments:  The most important point before even thinking about
           resubmitting your web site is to really have some
           fresh new content first.  Only then it makes sense
           to submit your web site again to the search engines.


2. How can I increase my traffic using offline sources?
   (Question submitted by: Tracy Whitt)

Audra Gehrke:
  "You can start out by placing small ads in your local
   newspaper's classifieds.  Write a short 2 to 3 line
   description with eye catching words and leave your phone
   number along with any other contact info.  You can also place
   a small ad in your local phone book."

Tony Rigby:
  "Offline Yellow Pages, Newspapers, Decals on your car,
   business cards on message boards at malls etc, directly visit
   your market and introduce yourself, radio, have a shirt with
   your business details and name on it, wear this at all public
   places."

Carlton Roark:
  "Use a toll free vanity number that spells your web address.
   The toll free vanity number can be used to offer your
   customers offline services using inexpensive computer
   telephony services like voicemail-to-email, etc."

Cathy Carlton:
  "Newspaper classifieds in "B" newspapers.  The suburban area
   newspapers generally have less costly advertising and your ad
   is less likely to get lost among the thousands of other ads.
   Local area ad sheets and mags or circulars with topics
   related to your business.  Also try making advertising
   "business cards".  You can make these out of actual business
   card stock OR just heavyweight paper stock.  Make the colors
   bright so they're easily noticed.  Put a "teaser ad" and your
   website, email and/or phone# where the product or more info
   can be obtained.  Place these mini-ads in strategic areas
   like phone booths, bus stops, local restaurants, bulletin
   boards, etc."

Steve Waters:
  "With all the tools, resources, and knowledge that is already
   on the Internet... it's not a good idea to even use any
   'offline sources' because there is so much more you get for
   your money and time with the right websites.  On the
   Internet, you 'have people's attention' at a much higher
   level than any 'offline method'.  Plus the costs and efforts
   are superior too."

Jason Hillard:
  "A number of ways... only limited by your imagination.  Print
   postcards, business cards, include your business card with
   your URL each time you send an account (if you have an
   offline business) or include 3 business cards when paying a
   bill by post, advertise on clothing (hats, caps, T-shirts,
   Polo Shirts) Bumper stickers, drink coasters, include your
   URL in EVERY letter you send out (have it printed on your
   stationery or in a letterhead template), if you have
   children... get them to advertise with clothing, stickers for
   their bicycles etc (kids are great for copying each other,
   so apply it!, heaps more...only limited by your imagination,
   and budget!  Whenever you get a phone call, just mention...
   'Have you seen my website?' and get them to copy your URL
   down... you get the idea..."

Comments:  To this point almost everybody had something to say.
           There are tons of ways to advertise your business
           offline.

           Most people think that advertising in local papers
           is the most important way.  Followed by the use of
           business cards to advertise your business.  The third
           place got the good old postcards followed by clothes,
           bumper stickers and the offline yellow pages.

           Of course it depends also on the products you use.
           Mine in example can easily be sold worldwide but not
           so easy in my local area.  Still I use bumper
           stickers, business cards and clothes to advertise
           additionally for it.


3. Do people have had more success with on-line ad submission or
   traditional print media??
   (Question submitted by: Kathy Smith)

Audra Gehrke:
  "I've never used traditional print media but I have been 
   marketing online for 3 years and have had a pretty good 
   success rate.  I think it's about half and half now.  The
   Internet has opened a lot of door's for a lot of people 
   and we'll see more and more advertising online as the year's
   go by.

   Whether you advertise online or offline, the same principles
   will apply.  You have to test, test and re-test your ads to
   see which ones work the best.  The big "Corporate" people use
   advertising consultants etc.  For us, we just have to find
   what works and what doesn't.  As long as you stick to your
   daily plan you will succeed in anything you choose to do.
   Never give up!"

Tony Rigby:
  "Online ad submission used to be good, but now that the web has
   grown, there is so much rubbish advertised that folks turn off
   to online ads as too many are affiliate rubbish with no long
   term benefit for the affiliate, just my opinion.

   Sponsor ads in Ezines is still effective. 

   Traditional print media in my opinion is where people are going
   back to.  Search engines are too full of mixed up listings.

   Pay per click engines are the latest chance of affordable
   search engine traffic, Overture etc, Google...

   Link exchanges are the new free traffic builder on the scene."

Carlton Roark:
  "I think it depends on what you are offering.  Local
   classified print advertising works very well, but in general
   I think traditional advertising is way over-priced, and it's
   effectiveness is over-stated by ad reps."

Jason Hillard:
  "Some do, some don't.  But in print media, your ad is among
   several thousand others, so it really is not worth the money
   unless you TEST, TEST, TEST and TEST some more.  The best
   form of offline print media to use is the local suburban
   newsletter as there are only a certain number of spaces for
   classifieds or small business card size display adverts.  You
   can also go into mail order by publishing an ad sheet which
   goes out to subscribers (advertisers).  Some of these
   publications also have ad co-ops whereby you swap at least
   one ad position for their ad."

Comments:  As most people that answered the this survey I had
           more success with online advertisement.

           Still, some of the ways of offline advertisement are
           so affordable like i.e. the bumper sticker for your
           car that it simply can't hurt to use them
           additionally.
